Why You’re Getting Traffic But No Calls (And What to Do About It)

You look at your site statistics and you see it increasing. More traffic, more clicks, perhaps even more time on site. Looks good on paper. But in reality? The phone isn’t ringing.

This is where most trades businesses fail. You might even be uploading photos or videos of your work, even using an mp4 compressor to look snazzy and save others the rouble. That part helps. It shows your work. But it doesn’t translate to phone calls.

It’s not necessarily the traffic that’s the problem. It’s what you do with the people who visit it.

Here are the main reasons why you have traffic, but not calls – and what to do about it.

1. Your Site is Hard to Navigate

Many websites are nice to look at. Good colour scheme, good images, some branding here and there. But then you ask:

What do you want me to do?

If you don’t tell them in a couple of seconds, they’re gone.

An example: a roofers web site with good photos of the work they’ve done. but no obvious “Call Now” button, no phone number up front and a contact form at the bottom.

People don’t want to figure things out. They want direction.

What to fix:

  • Put your phone number at the top of the page (mobile especially)

  • Put in a button: “Call Now” or “Request a Quote”

  • Put it at the top, middle and bottom of the page

  • Don’t overwhelm, just one call to action.

If they aren’t sure what to do, they won’t do it.

2. You’re Attracting the Wrong Kind of Traffic

Not all traffic is good traffic.

If people come to your site looking for things like “how to fix a leaking tap” you will get traffic. But that’s because they want to fix it themselves.

That’s the reason you can have a traffic increase, but leads stay the same.

What to fix:

  • Target searches with a “hiring intent”, such as:

    • emergency plumber near me”

    • plumber to repair my boiler in [city]”

    • roof replacement cost [city]”

  • Create service pages for your services

  • Add your location to each page

You don’t need more traffic. You need the right one.

3. Your Website Is Not Trustworthy

Put yourself in the shoes of a customer.

They land on your site. It looks fine. But:

  • No reviews

  • No real job photos

  • No evidence you have done it before

Why would they call you?

Most people are shopping 2-3 businesses at a time. If another site shows real results and yours doesn’t, you lose. Simple as that.

What to fix:

  • Add real customer reviews (not generic ones)

  • Show before and after photos from actual jobs

  • Include short descriptions, such as:

    • what the problem was

    • what you did

    • the result

Better still, include short videos from the job site. Nothing fancy. A 20-second video about the problem is good. It’s real, and that’s reassuring.

4. You are Hard to Reach

This one is costly.

No-one wants to go through a maze to get a quote. If you seem difficult to get hold of, they move on to the next business.

Common issues:

  • Long contact forms with too many fields

  • No click-to-call option on mobile

  • Slow response times

The truth is, most customers will shop around with a couple of trades and choose the first responder.

What to fix:

  • Keep it simple: name, phone number, job description

  • Add a click-to-call button for mobile users

  • Offer simple options like WhatsApp or quick message forms

  • Respond fast — even a quick “Got your message, will call shortly” helps

Speed and convenience win leads.

5. Your Content Looks Good… But Doesn’t Lead Anywhere

Many trades businesses are beginning to publish more content. Photos of work, videos, before and afters. That’s a good move.

But here’s the problem:

Much of it is just that.

No direction. No next step.

Say you produce a video of a completed bathroom. It looks great. But there’s no call to action, no way to get a quote, no direction on how best to visit your website.

So they watch… and leave.

What to fix:

  • Every piece of content should point somewhere:

    • a service page

    • a quote form

  • Add simple prompts like:

    • Need this done? Call today”

    • Click here for a quote”

  • Showcase your stuff, then sell your solution

Attention is good. Action is better.

Quick Self-Check

If you’re not getting calls, run through this:

  • Can you be contacted within 3 seconds of arriving on your site?

  • Do people know what you do and where you work?

  • Are you showing evidence of what you do?

  • Do you capture the attention of those who want to hire?

If you struggled with any of these, that’s probably where you’re losing leads.

Final Thought

Most trades businesses think they have a traffic problem.

But the traffic is probably there. It just isn’t turning into sales.

Small changes — clearer buttons, better targeting, more trust signals — can make a big difference fast. You don’t need a full redesign. You just need to make it easier to pick you.

Because ultimately it’s not about the traffic you get.

It’s about how many call you.
